Triage Systems

Emergency Nurses Association and American College of Emergency Physicians have recommended that emergency deprtments use a valid , reliable 5 level acuity system. Two such systems are Emergency Severity Index( ESI) and Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS).

According to an article by Debra A. Woods in the article"On the level",nursing researchers have found that a 5 level triage is more effective and reliable than the former 3 level triage system and nurses like it better. The new system decreases uncertainity over who is the most acute patient.( ref: http://www.nurseweek.com/news/features/04-06/triage.asp
